    1. In a large saucepan, cover the beans with water and bring to a boil.
    2. When the water is boiling, pour it off. Replace with fresh water and bring to a boil.
    3. Simmer on low heat for 1 to 1.5 hours. When beans can be mashed easily between fingers, they're done.
    4. Drain the beans. Mix in the sugar and salt.
    5. Simmer over low heat until a spatula can draw a line across the bottom of the saucepan. Remove to a container to cool.
